Buying books online - isn't Amazon the best value?

Everybody wants good value when they buy books online - especially expensive ones. And everyone knows that people like Amazon have transformed book buying to provide everyone with better value than bookshops and other booksellers.

Don't they? Haven't they?

Not exactly. I am telling you because I should know. I too am a trader. I get the same prices, presumably, as Amazon from the publishing houses. They may even get a bigger discount from me becuase they buy in bulk for their thousands of customers. So how can I charge less than me?

Is it because they add apostage charge of around 3 to all orders under around 39? Most paperback books are around 6.99. If you look at Amazon's description of the book it may say "Our price 5.59. You save 20%". You are then invited to "buy now".

So you are saving 1.40 on the price you would pay in a bookshop but then paying 3 postage. That makes the price 1.60 MORE than the bookshop price. That's the smallest village bookshop you can find, remember. Are you really going to order 39 worth of books at once? Can your credit card stand it?

But are Amazon making a loss by offering you a 20% discount in the first place? Not on your life. They often get 35% discount. So they paid around 4.50 a book they are then asking you to pay 5.59. How many people buying a popular book does it take for them to cover their costs and make a profit even if they DIDN'T charge you 3 postage.

But they do charge you that. So its not even a question of making a small profit or loss on each sale and hoping selling to lots of people gets them a discount on their postage bill - which it usually does.

So how much should you pay? Well, we would make a profit on that 6.99 book with 35% discount to us from the publisher by charging you 5.75 INCLUDING POSTAGE.

So, please. Don't think you're not paying shop prices rather than discount prices. And I mean corner shop inflated prices, not Wal Mart sell it cheap prices.

"What Do I Sell?"Shahnaz Rauf

"What Do I Sell?"

Copyright [C] 2003 Shahnaz Rauf, www.snzeport.com

What do I sell? This is a very critical question that I get asked very often. Yes there are loads of people out there who have obtained all the right online marketing tools, they have learned all the concepts and techniques of online marketing, yet they don`t know what to sell. Yes they keep shuffling along from program to program hoping to strike it rich somewhere. They loose a lot of money along the way to ultimately get disillusioned.

Now If you plan to operate on the internet, your first and foremost product should be yourself.

Yes, you are your own product. You need to sell yourself to develop trust and credibility the basic elements for any sales process. To do so you need to develop your own mailing list. This is not just a list of email addresses, this is a highly responsive list of followers who trust and respect you to the core.

Once you have got such a killer list, you may proceed to

- Recommend other People`s tried and tested quality products and earn through affiliate commissions.

- You can sell advertising space in your newsletter.

- Or you may even convert your list into a paid membership site or a monthly subscription based list.

- And ultimately Develop your own product line.

Of course there are people earning incredible fortunes just by selling other peoples products, but such top affiliates are really few and far between, countable on your fingers they also usually have huge lists with a trusted set of followers.

But to reach the ultimate bliss in marketing you need to develop your own product line. Here the big question is

How do you come up with your own killer product line? here is the basic procedure:

1. Define What you really want to do

Here your own interest or what you really want to do is important. You may not be able to attain any great heights without that spark of passion driving you along. Also you do not want to get stuck in another dead end project where even getting started becomes a big challenge. So the all defining question is What do you enjoy doing? Or rather,

What can you do effortlessly without taxing yourself too much work on your strengths and weaknesses, which ones can you polish up to use successfully.

Once you have sorted out your own inner turmoil and discovered what you really want to do, you have got your niche category or boundaries of operation. Next you need to proceed with the equally important second step:

2. What do the people want?

Or rather what do your potential customers want. To be able to sell successfully you have to find a problem/ need within your niche and provide the perfect solution. So here comes the part of doing the market research. No dont be turned off, online market research may not be as complicated as the offline version.

How To develop your own killer product:

- One conventional technique is to organize a questionnaire/ quiz/ Survey and promote it.

- Another way is to lurk in forums related to your area of interest and find out what people are talking about. What problems they have and work out a solution.

- Yet another powerful way is to capitalize on the concept of keywords. Discover what words or phrases are most frequently searched on the various search engines, what information are people desperately looking for. Here are some tools to help you out:

http://www.goodkeywords.com - fr*ee software to enable you get all the keywords relevant to your area of interest.

http://www.wordtracker.com - You can get a fr*ee weekly report of the top 500 frequently searched words on the Internet.

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ - Here you can check the popularity/ how many searches are being made for any keyword of your choice.

Once you have short listed your search terms, use these terms on the search engines yourself, visit all the sites that come up and find out what is the missing element that you can capitalize on.

- OK you have hit the raw nerve. Now do some brain storming/ mind mapping to work out what kind of information/ software/ website is needed. You may get incredible professional assistance to develop your product from http://www.elance.com

Now here are some insider tips for you to get your creative juices flowing:

-All the newbies on the net are desperately searching for some realistic sure fire way to start earning a decent income easily and immediately.

- All the oldbies with websites or products are searching for new ways to advertise/ market effectively and cheaply.

- Also another killer idea/product is desperately needed to overcome the hegemony and over exposure of email marketing. As frankly the average person is not usually cut out to handle developing huge responsive mailing lists. And now the ugly sp*m filters overtones ringing in the back ground are heralding the impending failure of email marketing.

A brain wave anyone?

Customer Review: OBD II & Electronic Engine Management Systems (Haynes)

This book is easy reading and comprehensive. It covers all of the OBD II diagnostic codes for the majority of auto builders. I've found it to be very helpful in diagnosing vehicles with the check engine light on.

Customer Review: OBD-II insight

The book is quite useful to help one understand how the OBD-II system works. It may not solve your current problem, but at least you will have some idea of what causes the "service engine" light to come on and sometimes go off. It makes no bones about the fact that some problems are difficult to solve.

Customer Review: Travel bag

I purchased the Travelon expandable bag and though it is a nice bag it is not as roomy as they describe. The picture is deceptive. Read the dimensions of the bag and that will give you a better idea of how large the bag is

Customer Review: New bag

I just got this bag a couple of days ago. I just put all my stuff in it and actually used it out for the first time today while shopping. I like the fact that it has lots of room inside and lots of pockets. I got this for eveyday use and I know it will come in handy when out with my kids, because of all the stuff I end up holding for them. I haven't tried putting a water bottle in it yet, but am sure one will fit. The only thing I didn't like about it was, the strap kept digging into my neck, but I am sure that once I get used to it and get the strap adjusted right, it should be fine. I love that I can walk around a store and be hands free and not have to worry about someone walking off with my bag. I think the over the body design will also help with the shoulder and back pain I get from hauling around a heavy bag on one side.
