How To Use Alibris To Find Public Domain Books

The very best way to be sure the materials you are using are truly public domain
is to go right to the original published book. But finding an original source
book can be quite difficult. Alibris makes it much easier.

What is Alibris?

In their own words:

"Alibris connects people who love books, music and movies to thousands
of independent sellers around the world. Our proprietary technology and advanced
logistics allow us to offer over 30 million used, new and hard-to-find titles
to consumers, libraries and other institutions."

Basically if you know Amazon, you understand Alibris. The crucial difference
is that Alibris allows you to do searches based on publication date and that
makes it very valuable indeed.

How to search.

To start a search, you want to go to the Advanced Search page. Just to to alibris.com
and click on their advanced search button right where it says books. It is located
right below the basic search in the left hand corner of the home page.

This brings you to a page with many input options. In addition to the standard
title, keyword, etc. inputs is one very valuable input near the bottom of the
form. It is called Publication Year - and one of its options is labeled
Before. And that is very powerful.

Lets say you were looking for a book on baseball that was in the public domain.
Put the word baseball in the title and in the publication date/before field
put 1923.

This particular research pulled up over 200 possible books that you have the
opportunity to purchase and turn into a product.

A word of warning

The search results are only as good as the data input by the sellers. This
means that a certain percentage of books will not match your search terms and
a certain number of dates will be wrong - specifically I see lots of books with
a publication date of 1900 which is clearly wrong. (I'm guessing that 1900 is
the default if no date is entered.)

Therefore, before purchasing a book, it is generally a good idea to send a
note to the particular seller to verify the publication date before investing
money in the book.

While I would much prefer seeing the book before making a purchase to verify
that it meets my needs, if the price is reasonable enough, I figure it is just
part of the cost of researching for the product.

Oh, and this is also a good way to search for available books published after
1922 that are in the public domain. For instance if you are looking at doing
a diet related product, you could search for books say before 1960 and then
when you find books with interesting titles, you can then do a copyright search
as discussed in another article on this site (link at end) to see if the book
fell into the public domain. And who knows, this could result in finding a diamond
in the rough. In fact, at least for diet books, there have been several bestsellers
in recent years based on either a public domain book or a government publication.

I was disappointed with this movie. The first one, Elizabeth, was so much better. This was drawn out and really didn't go into all the events of the golden age. If my memory serves me right the daughter of the Spanish king, Philip, was not that young and the war scene did not occur as depicted in history. Even if the facts were not correct, it was not that entertaining.

Customer Review: Masterpiece

Twenty years ago most cop shows were simplistic tales of good verses evil and to learn about the real world one had to read books. This show however is probably better than any novel that I have read and is a remarkable portrayal of how systems work and fail to work. The systems that are examined are the police system, the school system and the criminal underclass. It is also an indictment on urban decay and how its corruption touches everyone. Even a politician who starts of as seriously motivated to reform a corrupted system.



The first series of the Wire was about a successful police operation which targeted a criminal gang. This series shows how police forces can fail. The way that the drug gangs work in this show (and no doubt in real life) is that they are hierarchical. Distribution is done by dealers on street corners employing low level operatives. The ones who handle the drugs are under age children who face lower level penalties if caught. The organisation is run by bosses who don't touch the drugs and use enforcers to kill as a means of enforcing discipline and controlling territory. The easiest targets are the street operatives but their arrest does little to cripple the organisation as there is a reservoir of young people looking to get into the game. Lazy policing targets the street operatives as it leads to arrests but doesn't dent the basic organisation. Successful policing looks at the means of arresting the bosses and enforcers. This of course is infinitely more difficult. The organisational dynamics of the police force are that success is not measured in terms of shattering criminal organisations but in arrest statistics. Thus the police focus on the lower level of the criminal system and are at best an irritant rather than a threat to the criminal gangs.



Series four looks at the education system in a decaying city and how it spawns a cadre of youth keen to go into drug dealing as the one sure career path available to them. How the notion of "leaving not children behind" in practice means the rote teaching of exam questions to maintain school funding and the total failure to engage the pupils of the school. The means of viewing the educational system is for the series having a new teacher trying to make a difference and the frustration he faces in trying to make a difference. Whilst he has his little successes it is against the background of a failing system.



In past series the skills of police were on display. In this series a number of the heroes of the past series have been moved out of centre stage and some of the hopeless have been moved forward. A sergeant promoted above his competence is put in charge of a serious drug investigation. His surveillance camera is spotted by its target and the gang leader under surveillance plays games with him setting up a dummy operation were an innocent is arrested. The sergeant moves from one blunder to another losing his camera and then losing focus on doing his job. He is responsible for one of the central tragedies of the series when he carelessly reveals the identity of a 14 year old informant who then becomes the subject of violent reprisals. He also fails to protect another informant who works out his own revenge.



Yet not only is the series a portrayal of the decay of a modern American city it is a drama with realistic and rounded characters whose world the viewer is drawn into.



The last series of the Wire was a little below the high level of the first two series. However this is a blistering return to form and is without doubt some of the greatest television ever made.

I'm a hard man to please when it comes to a cop show but The Wire has never let me down. The only thing that prevents season 4 rating a 5/5 is that it followed the awesome season 3 (which is the best series of ANY show EVER).

Kids Make - Christmas Note Books, an Ideal Gift

Little notebooks are so handy to jot down messages, phone numbers, shopping lists and appointments. Little note pads can be kept in handbags, or next tot he telephone, on a desk, in school bags and all other sorts of places. Being this useful, a nice note book would make a great Christmas for Mum, Dad, your sister or Granny, Your Auntie, Uncle, the neighbours, your teacher or friend and anyone who may need to jot things down from time to time.

Buy a small, soft covered note pad, don't spend too much because it's going to be re-vamped.

To make the Rudolf note book, start off by using a grey piece card to cut out two identical antlers. Stick these out from the top of the note pad so that they hang off the top of the pad. Next cover the front cover of he pad in brown paper, covering the bottoms of the antlers. This creates Rudolf face. Stick on two white ovals for eyes. Use a felt tip pen to draw on some pupils. Cut out a large circle from some red paper. You guessed it! That's Rudolf's nose. Stick it down towards the bottom of the pad. You can stick some red glitter to Rudolf's nose to make it shiny.

To make the Christmas tree note book, First cover the front of the note pad in green paper. Field a piece of green card (the same size as the notebook) in half vertically and cut out a Christmas tree shape. Stick sequins to the Christmas tree and sprinkle on some glitter if you wish. Stick to the Christmas tree to the note pad with a line of glue down the fold of the Christmas tree, so that it stands out slightly from the pad. To Finnish it off, cut out a star and stick it to the top of the Christmas tree.

Remember, not to use too much glue. You don't want to stick all the note pad pages together.

When you get started you will have lots more ideas of other delightful Christmas designs that you can apply to a note pad. Your friends and family will love one of these cute little stocking fillers, gone on why not make a couple.

I've never played Dungeons & Dragons (which this game is a satire on), but I am a huge fan of board games and card games. Munchkin is a great game for 3 or more people who don't mind being geeks for a few hours. The game combines a heavy dose of D&D satire, witty puns, pop culture, and mild adult humor. The object of the game is to outfit your character with an arsenal of unusual weapons, items, and abilities in order to slay monsters and gain levels. Your friends are doing the same, and you can benefit from both helping and hindering them. The rules can be a little daunting at first, but players pick it up quickly. Plus, all of the cards have explanations on them. With the exception of "The Need for Steed", the expansions add a great amount of variety to the cards without making the game longer or more complicated. "The Need for Steed" does add a small amount of complexity to the game, but does not make the game longer to play. Although playing with 2 players is technically possible, it is a very different experience and does not compare to playing with 3 or more players.

I wanted to get this atlas, especially to help us find places to go camping and hiking.. It's not always easy to find campgrounds or primitive campsites (since they're not always located in clearly identified campgrounds), so having these detailed maps is very useful for that. We recently used the atlas when we camped in the Catskill Mountains region, and I was glad we had these maps to help us out.

Everybody would love to make lots of money quickly, working from home, and only doing a few hours of work per week. I've spent the past two years trying to find a great way of doing this. Only over the course of the past few months have I found any "get rich quick" programs worth buying. I've been trying to make money online for a long time. I had a few small websites, but they never made much more than a few hundred per month. It was easy money and didn't require much work on my part, but I knew there were people out there doing better than I was and I knew I could do as well as them.

Now, I've seen a lot of "get rich quick" programs. Most of these people make claims about earning $2000/day with Google or something similarly insane. Almost all of these people are complete liars. Even if they were making $2000/day with Google AdSense, it'd be because they had high- traffic websites with a lot of quality content. I'd know, because in one whole month, I never even made half of what they promised I'd make daily with their programs. Maybe you've already been scammed by one of these fraudsters. Anyway, I finally got sick of what was being offered.

I decided I'd look through the all of the "get rich quick" programs I could find and see if there were any that were actually legitimate. I found that there were owners selling their programs for well over $100, but the information in them could be found almost anywhere online for free. Additionally, they all contained out-of-date information, had no e-mail support, no money back guarantees, and broken links in the downloads section.

In conclusion, almost all of the programs I found were completely useless. The owners knew it, but they couldn't care less about their customers since they didn't offer refund policies! Amazingly, while looking through all of the programs, I actually did find a few legitimate programs. They were run by ordinary people like you and me, and they had found some great methods of making money from their home by doing very little work.

I spent some time working with those programs, and my income is now ten times what it used to be. These programs provided a large amount of great information on how to make extra money on your computer doing very little work. Numerous customers had provided great feedback and reviews for their products. Many of them have started to make money just days after buying!

Their programs have excellent prices, and the authors have a group of paid staff who are dedicating to helping you or providing assistance if you need any. I must say I was amazed! If you do decide to purchase any of the programs listed below, I recommend you join quickly. Its everything you'd expect from the pictures, the claw looks very cool, And the wall mountable plaque makes for a interesting display piece. I did have two issues with the claw I received.



1. The Claw doesn't hang properly on the plaque,this problem bugged me the most. The Plaque has two hooks that hold the claw in place when it is hanging on the wall, Unfortunately the holes for the hooks weren't drilled properly on mine so the claw hangs to the left slightly and not straight down. Not that hard to fix though I just drilled a new hole and filled in the other with a black filler.



2. The Blades on the claw aren't all aligned evenly, the middle claw is slightly lower than the other two blades. Its barely noticeable and didn't ruin the claw for me. Even if all the X-Claws are like this I'd still recommend it, I seriously doubt most people would notice or even care.



1 and 2. Both of these from what I can tell are quality control issues, I doubt all the X-claws have these problems. But if you want to avoid them you'd have to buy it in person and inspect it before you buy it.



Now for my personal recommendations if your going to buy this. The Claw comes sharpened so be extremely careful, its not razor sharp but you should still use the same caution you'd use with any blades. Just holding it in your hand and you can feel the blunt ends of the blades press into the fleshy area between your knuckles. If your going to actually try to wield it you should wrap or tape up your hand with special attention to the areas between your knuckles. Seriously though this is obviously a novelty item and not meant for combat of any kind. If you get one make sure its just for display, and put it somewhere out of reach from children.

There are guides for connecting an xbox controller to the pc and using a usb stick to transfer files, but I couldn't get that to work. So, I ordered this, now that my xbox is (soft)modded, don't need it anymore, except maybe to mod other people's xbox's.

Got this toy for my 6 and 3 year old boys. They play with it all the time. My three year old is pretty small and he has this huge watch on his arm just working the dial. He really digs it. It does not do much but makes noise and my kid loves that. He thinks he is Ben Ten. So, any toy they play with is good. It did not do much for me but I expected more technology for the price.

For many listeners, Little Voice will be their first exposure to this soulful singer/songwriter, but it's actually Sara Bareilles' second record. Her first, the self-released Careful Confessions, led to a deal with Epic. Since then, Bareilles has opened for Marc Broussard and Maroon 5. She's also become a bonafide soundtrack queen with tracks featured in female-centric films Girl Play, Loving Annabelle, and Monster-in-Law. As with her out-of-print debut, the UCLA grad wrote every song on her first major label recording (Little Voice features re-worked versions of several demo numbers). Like the portrait on the back of the CD--Bareilles in strappy black dress and lace-free high-tops--the piano-playing chanteuse combines the sweet with the scruffy. While her jazzy pop melodies are radio-ready, her relationship-oriented lyrics can be unexpectedly salty ("Bottle Up" and "Come Round Soon" wouldn't pass FCC muster). A little profanity here and there, however, doesn't indicate tough-girl attitude--Amy Winehouse can rest easy--so much as a desire to express herself freely. As Bareilles explains in "Love Song," "I'm trying to let you hear me as I am." (Not surprisingly, her degree is in communications.) Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alicia Keyes will find much to like here. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Sara Bareilles has a voice of an angel, no doubt. Her songs, which consists of pop, alternative, funk, and soul genres make you want to sing along song after song. I love listening to her after a stressful day or school and work. Her voice really does soothes my "soul". There is no other better way to describe it. A must buy!

This isn't going to be a very sophisticated review; nor is it necessarily objective. I loved the CD mostly because I really enjoy her voice; I find it nice and mellow and fun to listen to in the car. I heard her first on the Napster commercial and decided I had to have her CD, pure and simple. Little known artists need all the help they can get in the form of CD sales, so any type of illegal download is out of the question. I think America has to vote with their wallets in this type of situation.



And yes, I do believe others will enjoy her music as well, although I understand this style is not for everyone. So, if you liked her sound-bite on the commercial, you won't be disappointed by buying the full version.

Planet Earth, the series, is without doubt, the finest nature film ever made. All of their shots are breath-taking, with some appearing to be almost impossible to make. How they were able to capture so much wild-life, and rare wild-life at that, on film is both a wonder and a testament to the dedication the producers and film makers brought to the project.



And if you own a Blue Ray Disc Player, this is one film (there are four discs) that is simply a must for your collection. In fact, such is the realism and dynamic impact, I mounted my digital camera on a stand and took still frame shots of some of the images directly off my new 52" LCD TV screen. At 1080p, I've never seen a nature film that comes anywhere close to matching the grandeur and beauty that this series offers. The photography is so good, one might mistake it for an art film.



This is a must-have.

Customer Review: Terrible Convoluted Storyline - Poor Production

Anyone who is giving this a great review really does not know the comics or charicters very well. More importantly, they do not know what makes for great story-telling because this is a TERRIBLE story.



My credentials: Comicbook collector for 30 years. I own over 100,000 and have favored the DC characters since I was a child. I consider myself to be a knowledgable fan and expert.



The artwork in this film was not that great.....but that is ok. The voice acting was pretty good. The story line, plot development, and character backgrounds/definitions were probably the WORST of any animated movie I have ever seen.



Almost every scene had nothing to do with the next one or any other one for that matter. Almost every scene had nothing to do with how the story would progress or eventually resolve. Examples:



1: The first scene with Superman and Wonder Woman had nothing to do with any other point in the movie where they interacted with each other.

2: The story and development of J'onn Jonzz, The Martian Manhunter (which was a majority of the film) had nothing to do with anything. The story could have been told with the omission of ALL his scenes.

3: ALL the scenes of interaction between Batman and J'onn were irrelevant to the unanticipated role that Batman would play at the end. Eliminate all those scenes and the storyline would have been the same.

4: The main "bad guy" has been around for millions of years, then basically pops up out of nowhere (in terms of human history) and is then defeated in what I consider to be extremely easy fashion.

5: Said bad guy takes out Superman like he's a ragdoll but can't do the same with the Flash, or the humans that are attacking it?



I could list many more but I think you get my point. Bottom line; All this is is a collection of non-related scenes leading up to a lame conclusion. I am so very disappointed in Bruce Timm (normally an absolute genius), Darwyn Cooke, and especially Dan Didio and DC Comics for allowing this rubbish to be distributed.



As a DC fanatic, I cant help but notice the quality stuff being put out by Marvel. (Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and other animation). Come on DC.....you can be great again.

WHAT A TRULY GREAT GPS. I HAD ONE OF THE OLD GARMIN MODELS AND THE DIFFERENCE IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY.
