Once I learnt more and more about fantasy books, I fostered a desire of writing on fantasy books. Now that my desire has been fulfilled, I hope your desire for its information too has been fulfilled.

?The path is easy to follow, but people love to get sidetracked," said the guru.

Boy, do I love to get sidetracked. Interesting ideas, interesting people, interesting software come into my field of vision and grab my time and energy. These can spark creativity, but on the whole I know I have to stick with the fundamentals.

In soccer, the fundamentals are running and kicking. In baseball, they are throwing and hitting. In relationships they translate to, listening and having patience.

What are the fundamentals in publishing? How about those basics passed down from one-room schoolteachers everywhere: Readin', Ritin', and Rithmetic?

Of course, it's a schoolyard jingle, but as a model it can be powerful for covering the fundamentals of a publishing business. Reading is information in, writing is information out from your business, and arithmetic is the accounting and decision making to be financially successful.

Reading

Reading is research, trend watching, and learning about all the ways to run your business. Where can you find things to read? Writers are by nature readers so you probably have no lack of material. Go to your library or bookstore to find publishing, marketing, and PR books. Publishers Weekly Magazine is the source to learn about the bigger world of publishing. Finally, type "publishing", "writing", or anything else of interest into your nearest Internet search engine and get your readin' done.

Writing

Writing is the message you put out about your publishing company, whether in the books you publish or the e-mails you send. It is all-important in this Internet age. What people read about you is what they think about you.
The best rule of marketing and promotion ever is simply that the only thing your audience and customers care about is themselves. Always write about the benefits to your customers.

Arithmetic

We are running a business. We are not creating art and waiting for the world to discover us. All of you experienced publishers who read this will say, Well, of course, what else is new? Many novices will say, "Not me. I will not compromise my art with commerce."

All small business people need to be good at the financial analysis and decision making necessary to run a business. How do you do this? If you have the time, take an accounting or small business course at your local junior college. If you don't, go to the Small Business Administration Web site (www.sba.gov) and read their many articles on accounting and financial analysis.

The path is easy to follow. Do your homework and stick to your Readin', Ritin', and Rithmetic.

Make Your Copywriting Projects Unbeatable...By Reading Old Comic Books?

Perhaps the best "power education" I've ever received on writing copy and using good old-fashioned psychology to sell with the written word was when I was just a kid.

You see, back then I used to collect a lot of comic books. And back then comic books had some of the best direct response ads you'll ever see.

They were written by just awesome copywriters who really understood people's hot buttons and exactly what people wanted to buy and how to get them to buy with just a few words.

In fact, I often tell people who use pay-per-click advertising to look at old comic book ads.

Why?

Because those copywriters really understood how to sell -- not just generate leads -- with just one or two sentences. In some cases, they did it with just a few words (Like the "Charles Atlas" ads, for example).

And that's why old comic book ads are just phenomenal as copywriting aids and tools.

Just make sure you look at the right ads.

These days -- like in most magazines and publications -- comic book ads are nothing but big image ads. They have more in common with big glossy business cards, than ads. And are a waste of time to look at.

Instead, seek out the comic books from 20+ years ago -- from the 1940's up until the late 1980's.

That was when the really powerful ads were run and hundreds of millions of dollars worth of various different products were sold with simple direct response ads in comic books.

Reviewing Books Makes You a Better Writer

I have a suggestion for all of the unpublished or little published writers our there. If you want to improve your writing skills, read more books and get writing credits, you might want to apply to be a children?s book reviewer. I decided to become a book reviewer over a year ago and it has helped me in many ways.

FREE BOOKS

I knew this would get your attention. Did you know that book reviewers receive FREE BOOKS in the mail? It?s true. The publication that you work for will send you a list of books that need reviewing every month or quarter. You then choose books that look interesting and after the publication gets feedback from all of their reviewers, they mail books to each of you. The first time I got home and found a Federal Express envelope on my doorstep with a free book inside, my heart beat a little faster. Most months I receive 2 or 3 children?s books that need reviewing. The books are usually hardcover, but not always. They are also new books and you will get to read them before the general public. I don?t know about you, but that is exciting to me.

CHILDREN?S BOOK REVIEWERS ARE IN DEMAND

We all have one thing in common: we love children?s books. We wouldn?t be trying to write for children if we didn?t. Most book reviewers are in this business for the free books, but most of them want to read adult fiction. I like adult fiction, but my skills were needed on the children?s side. The publishers get too many volunteers to review adult fiction.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Getting started is surprisingly easy. I write reviews for both Kidsreads.com and Teenreads.com. I originally queried on the Internet to find companies that review books. You might want to start with an online review service and later offer your skills to a print newspaper or magazine. The online review services provide reviewers with free books, but generally do not pay them. Later you could become a paid reviewer when you have clips of your reviews to send to a magazine or newspaper. I wrote a sample review for a middle grade novel I had read. I sent the sample review to several on line review services and I was accepted as a reviewer soon after that.

MEETING DEADLINES

I have learned valuable time management skills as a reviewer. With each book that I receive, I get a review deadline. I usually have about one month to read and write my review of each book, but it is sometimes shorter. This has sharpened my time management skills and it has made me a faster reader. Writing reviews also forces you to cut through the book and write a tight summary. This skill could come in handy if you ever need to write a query letter or a synopsis of a novel.

READERS MAKE BETTER WRITERS

Every writer has heard that you won?t have the skills to write unless you read. I now read at least thirty-six children?s novels each year in order to write my reviews. Most of the books I have reviewed have been quite good. I have had the thrill of being one of the first to read new books by Patricia Reilly Giff and Walter Dean Myers.

If you like to read children?s books as much as I do, I think you might enjoy being a book reviewer. It forces you to read and write on schedule. You will be surprised that when your writing life becomes more structured, you will be a much more productive writer. Good luck and happy reading!

Accounts Payable Help in QuickBooks - How to Fix Negative Balances in A/P

Occassionally, a negative balance arises in Accounts Payable (A/P), and business owners who take care of their own books don't understand how the problem happened or what to do about it. Here's the scoop:

A negative balance in A/P can sometimes mean that bills were entered, and checks were written against those bills, but the original bills somehow got deleted or voided. The bill-payment checks are left "hanging" in the system, creating a negative balance in A/P.

If you notice a negative balance in A/P, or even if you have certain vendors who show a negative balance in the Vendor list, go to the Reports menu and select Vendors & Payables. Then select the Unpaid Bills Detail report. Scan through the report and look for negative amounts. If you see any, double click on them.

After double clicking, a bill-payment check should open. Look at the lower half of the screen. Possibly, there will be no bill located here, no amount at all, nothing to indicate that this check was applied to a bill. If so, leave this window open, and go to the Vendors menu. Select Enter Bills. Enter a bill to the vendor you just saw on the last screen. Be sure to use the same amount you saw on the check. You will need to guess as to the correct due date - better yet, try to locate the original bill so you can get correct information off it. After entering it, click Save & New to leave the window open if you have more bills to enter, or Save & Close to close the window if you are finished.

After entering the bill, go back to the bill-payment check. Look at the lower half of the screen - the bill should be there. If it is, place a checkmark next to it, and enter the correct amount (the amount on the check) in the far right column. Click Save and Close. QuickBooks will ask if you are sure you want to save the transaction - click Yes.

Go to the Unpaid Bills Detail report and click Refresh. The bill-payment check, which caused the negative amount on this report, should now be gone. Follow these steps for all negative amounts you see on this report.

Important: notice that you did not repay the re-entered bills - you did not use the Pay Bills function. The original bill-payment checks were in the system, and we simply applied those checks to the re-entered bills. If you accidently repay the re-entered bills, this will not solve the problem of having a negative balance in A/P.

If you see negative amounts that DO have bills applied against them, that is an issue beyond the scope of this article.

Customer Review: Great guide and is in-depth

If you're like me, then you like Dan Birlew and the BradyGAMES Signature Series guides. These guides are very in-depth and after the Devil May Cry guide got this off to a great start, the Onimusha 2 guide keeps it going. I'll give you tons of reason why this is the best Strategy Guide (in my opinion) then any other Onimusha guide out there.

First of all, like any guide (or hopefully any guide), there is the walkthrough. This walkthrough is very in-depth with ultra detailed maps that pin-point every item! The walkthough is precise and quite possibly one of the most in-depth organized walkthrough from BradyGAMES to date. The author does a great job explaining the strategies, and talks about the better approach for Offensive and defensive battle tatics against bosses.

The game basics section is for me especially. If you don't feel you get enough explanation on attacks etc. from the instruction booklet (like me) then the game basics section does a great job on explaining just how to get critical hits, when is best to attack and when its best to just haul you butt out of there.

There is also a list included for trading items. The only gripe I have with this list (and the guide) is that this trading list isn't in alphabetical order, meaning you'll be reading up and down the list just to find if the item is worth trading to another. But they do explain how to trade and tell you what you'll get too!

The alliances to form are listed in the back of the book in a flowchart. This shows you just what path to take! But it also explains just how you should form alliances as well. They tell you what the benefits are as well.

The secrets and sidequests and telling you how to use each character (combos and everything are explained). The side quest are brillantly outlined and easy to use. They tell you who gets what too. The secrets also explain a lot about the different difficulty levels and the Man in Black mini game.

Lastly, the guide completely covers the Oni mini game with a tear out wall scroll to go along with it. This is a great guide and if you're going to get Onimusha 2 then you should definitely get this book!

On the Positive side:
+Great Maps!
+Great Strategies!
+Crystal Clear screens with helpful captions
+Hey! Its Signature series
+Tricks of Trade revealed
+Side Quests explained
+Both mini-games explained
+Game Basics actually help you learn the game better then the manual.
+Interview with Keiji Inafune!

But on the downside
-The trading items list is out of order
-Some boss strategies are a little too focused on defense

Customer Review: Great Buy!!

I bought this for my 4 year old son's birthday. He is a total star wars fanatic. I was hesitant to buy this because I thought it would break easily because he is so ruff with his toys. That totally wasn't the case. The toy is very durable. The only thing that seems sort of flimsy is the cockpit door but if it comes off it snaps right back on. This is a great toy for all ages. The toy is well worth what I paid for it!

Customer Review: Awesome toy!

My 11 year old son loves this toy. It is durable enough to stand up to his constant use and crashes. If you can buy the Anakin Skywalker Saga Legends action figure it fits nicely in the cockpit. My son says that "anyone who likes Star Wars should buy this ship."

QuickBooks 2004 Users - Get Ready for Sunset

QuickBooks 2004 users need to be aware of the upcoming sunset of their product. Intuit sunsets certain products every year, usually in the spring. The term sunset refers to the fact that Intuit will no longer offer support for the product, and electronic features, such as QuickBooks Bill Pay, Online Banking, etc., will no longer be available from within that product.

QuickBooks 2004 will officially sunset on May 31, 2007, as per Intuit?s sunset policy. On Intuit?s Sunset Policy web page, no reason is given for sunsetting their products, although it stands to reason that the company cannot afford to support each version of QuickBooks without end.

QuickBooks 2004 users, who use the electronic features or who need support from Intuit, should seriously consider upgrading to QuickBooks 2007 now, rather than waiting until closer to the sunset date. The reason is that Microsoft will release its new Internet Explorer 7 before the end of 2006, and it?s not compatible with QuickBooks 2004, or any version of QuickBooks prior to 2004. Intuit has stated that it will not update QuickBooks 2004 in order to make it compatible with IE7. Since QuickBooks 2004 uses Internet Explorer 6 for certain functions, users are forced to make a decision: either upgrade to QuickBooks 2007 and download IE7 when prompted, or don?t upgrade QuickBooks 2004 and decline the upgrade to IE7 when prompted.

QuickBooks 2004 users, who do not need support from Intuit and who do not use any of the electronic services, may choose to decline the upgrade of IE7. These users may continue using their product after the May 31, 2007 sunset date without any problems, since the software will still continue to function normally.

Users of QuickBooks prior to 2004 should decline the upgrade to IE7 when prompted, since those products are no longer supported and will not be updated by Intuit for any reason.

Intuit has announced that it will update QuickBooks 2005 & QuickBooks 2006 to make them compatible with IE7, so users of those products do not need to take any special action at this time. QuickBooks 2007 is already compatible with either Internet Explorer 6 or 7.

Visit the Intuit sunset policy page for more information about Intuit's product discontinuation policy.

Complete-A-Sketch Book 3- Perspective

Complete-A-Sketch Book 3- Perspective
The primary focus of this volume is perspective or three dimensional art of the most realistic variety. Perspective line art is used primarily by people in architectural and art fields. It is a great skill to have. Like Volume 1 & 2, the lessons start with the most basic shapes, cubes cylinders, one point perspective and two point perspectives, etc. After this simple beginning the difficulty builds and becomes more interesting. This allows for quick successes and fun. Quickly the student gains confidence and builds on new skills to move on to increasingly more complex sketches. Complete-A-Sketch is reproducible for your family; your child can start working with this book at age 9 or 10. This volume is the most challenging of the series and some students may wish just do do this volume to help them with this specific skill. Written and illustrated by Melvin G. Peterman

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive
This elegant external hard drive, reminiscent of a book, is the perfect storage solution. It takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive, you just plug it in and it's ready to use. A USB 2.0 simple connection offers convenience and compatibility among multiple computers. Dimensions - Height 6.5 x Length 5.4 x Width 2.1 Weight - 2.5 Pounds

Customer Review: One of the better ones around...

Design & Portability

I had 2 external HD's, which were 250GB and 150GB. It was in two different enclosures, so where ever I went, it was a real hassle carrying two HD's. MyBook is pretty compact with 1TB platter inside, helps slimming the width. Its piano black enclosure is really slick in HD design. I would give this HD the best design in its category. Very simplistic, no buttons, small slit of blue LED in front.

Out of the box

Everything was packed, there were no mounting the HD inside the enclosure needed, unlike my older HD's. I just had to plug and play, it was that easy!

Performance

I have used this for over a month and its performance is average. The specs is on the HD is pretty fast with 7200 rpm and 16MB buffer speed. I have always preferred firewire ports for external HD, because they pack more power which helps transfer data much faster than the USB 2.0's

I have a XP PC and I cant boot my pc if the HD is connected. I always have wait few seconds before the login screen shows up, then I connect the HD. (But if you use this with VISTA, there is no problem).

Whenever I exit from standby mode, my system recognizes the HD as if it was just plugged in... the autoplay becomes very annoying.

Software

The software which comes it it is completely useless. I would even go as far as to say dont even try it, save your energy! Its just a free trial. Download free back up software @ www.free-backup.info. It is much better than is included with the HD.

Price

I bought it for $[...] from amazon. I would expect more ports and features for this price. It does not provide great bang for your buck when competitors like Cavalry 1TB CAXM3701T0 which sells around $[...], have SATA cable and eSATA bracket (faster data transfer}!

Overall Rating: 3.5/5

Recommended:

Yes

Pros

Slick shiny design, Consumer friendly, Compact and portable (1TB platter instead of 2x500GB)

Cons

average data transfer only 1 USB port, average price, software is useless

The Bottom Line

Recommended for the average pc user, if you are advanced.. checking the specs highly advised.

Customer Review: Lot of room ,but a little slow

"I bought the 1tb drive to start backup my computer. It runs Win XP home edition. I had a little difficulties with it, but not too bad beyond that, the drive has a lot of room and finally not too hard to setup. My complain is that the hard drive comes with 32 FAT format, and changing to NTFS you lose preloaded software, and valuable time(over 4 hours formating the drive).

When I first used it I noticed it was not as quite as other said, but I was told some noise is okay. I am a little worried about the drive failing so I am a little cautious about committing to it for baking up now.

I thought it would be a little faster too, but I guess that's not a big deal."

Want to Buy QuickBooks on Ebay - Now's Not the Time

I?m normally a big fan of purchasing products on Ebay. It?s an easy way to shop for what you want, and save money too. Brand new, legitimate copies of QuickBooks are readily available there, often for less than retail. Ebay is normally a great place to buy QuickBooks.

But not now. Right now, what you find mostly on Ebay are older versions of QuickBooks ? 2006 and prior. Don?t get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with older versions of QuickBooks. Legitimate and older versions of QuickBooks work just fine. But there are two problems with buying older versions of QuickBooks on Ebay right now:

1. Software compatibility with Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Vista

and

2. The Intuit Sunset Policy

Software Compatibility Issue: Internet Explorer 7

Microsoft will use its ?Automatic Updates? feature to automatically download IE7 into genuine Windows operating systems by the end of 2006. Therefore, it is important to know which version of QuickBooks you use, so you can decide if you want to install IE7 or not, after it has been downloaded.

Intuit, the publisher of QuickBooks, has announced that it will update QuickBooks 2005 and 2006 to be compatible with Internet Explorer 7 (QuickBooks 2007 is already compatible with IE7). Older versions of QuickBooks will not be updated. Since QuickBooks uses Internet Explorer for some online functions, having the correct match between QuickBooks and Internet Explorer is now important. Take a look:

QuickBooks 2004 and Prior: must use Internet Explorer 6

QuickBooks 2005 & 2006, before being updated: must use Internet Explorer 6

QuickBooks 2005 & 2006, after being updated: may use Internet Explorer 6 or 7

QuickBooks 2007: may use either Internet Explorer 6 or 7

If you currently own QuickBooks 2005 or 2006, be sure to turn on the Automatic Updates feature. This way, when Intuit releases updates, QuickBooks will receive them automatically.

Software Compatibility Issue: Windows Vista

Only QuickBooks 2007 will be compatible with the new Windows Vista operating system. Older versions of QuickBooks will not be updated to be compatible with Windows Vista.

At some point, most computers will be purchased with Windows Vista pre-installed - you may want to buy a new computer soon. Or, you may like Windows Vista and decide to upgrade your current operating system. Either way, if you purchase an older version of QuickBooks on Ebay, you will be forced to upgrade to QuickBooks 2007 after changing computers or upgrading your operating system. Avoid that hassle and expense. Buy QuickBooks 2007 instead.

Intuit Sunset Policy

Another reason to avoid older versions of QuickBooks on Ebay is the Intuit Sunset Policy. Intuit discontinues support and certain electronic services for older versions of QuickBooks each spring. For example, on May 31, 2007, QuickBooks 2004 will be sunsetted. Support and the following services will not be available after that date:

  • QuickBooks Bill Pay
  • Emailing Invoices, Estimates, Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, and any other form
  • Online Banking; downloading banking and credit card transactions
  • Certain payroll services
  • Merchant services (credit card processing from within QuickBooks)

This effects QuickBooks 2005 and 2006 because those products will be sunsetted in 2008 and 2009, respectively (unless Intuit changes its policy). If you use any of these electronic features, you will be forced to upgrade your software at that time. Why save a few bucks on an older version of QuickBooks, when you can buy QuickBooks 2007 and have it longer?

As you can see, purchasing an older version of QuickBooks on Ebay is just not a good idea. If you do, you may be forced to upgrade QuickBooks sooner than you like.

As a rule, when buying QuickBooks, always buy the most current version available. It will give you more flexibility than an older version of QuickBooks, and will last longer than less current versions.

Toyota Corolla and Geo/Chev Prizm Auto Repair Manual 93-02 (Haynes Manuals)

Toyota Corolla and Geo/Chev Prizm Auto Repair Manual 93-02 (Haynes Manuals)
Manuals for the Do-it-yourselfer. All Haynes manuals explain how to carryout routine maintenance, restoration and servicing of cars and motorcycles, and are aimed primarily at the Do-it-yourselfer

Customer Review: Great

I wanted to know more about my 2000 Corolla. This book gives you mostly clear instructions on how to replace components of your car. I wish I could compare it to Chilton's version of the car.

Customer Review: Haynes Repair Manual

The Haynes Repair Manuals are well worth the money. Keep in mind these are not as detailed as the auto manufacturer's service manuals, but of course you are only paying a fraction of the cost as the manufacturer's service manuals. These manual include most anything a weekend mechanic needs. They include several photos of repair procedures, tune-up specifications, torque specifications and electrical wiring diagrams for your vehicle. There are times the Haynes manuals lack some detail of your vehicle, but overall they are a good buy. I would recommended these manuals for most people. I always buy one for every vehicle I own.

We're Back!: A Dinosaur's Story

We're Back!: A Dinosaur's Story
Customer Review: Awesome Movie

For those of you who are adults and read way to much into this movie YOU SUCK!!!! This is a great movie for children and for children to enjoy it you parents have to get off your bum and teach them the differences between fiction and reality. Children will fall in love with the dinosaurs and their friends. It is a great way to show children that having an imagination is okay in the real world.

Customer Review: An Overlooked Treasure

I thank my father for introducing me to this film, at the tender age of seven or eight, because ever since watching it for the first few times, I have yet to hear mention of it again, which is an awful shame, seeing as this 1993 Amblimation classic is of considerably higher crust (and flavor) than much of what's animated nowadays. Call it contemporary '90s entertainment, but that's what's you want when you're looking for animated blockbusters.

Very loosely based on the Hudson Talbott children's book of the same name, "We're Back!" embraces quality animation and a once-in-a-lifetime voice cast (including not only John Goodman and Martin Short, but also Jay Leno and Walter Cronkite) to tell a somewhat basic story of friendship, self-sacrifice, and (to a lesser extent) overcoming one's fears by way of a dinosauric romp through New York City. Solidly constructed, the tale of smartened-up dinoes Rex, Elsa, Dweeb, and Woog lives by enthusiastic appeal that has the ability to overshadow some of the more simplistic aspects of the film, and, if nothing more, remind you why these kinds of films used to be fun.

These simplistic aspects are the film's drawbacks: the plot moves forth at a pace that's almost too leisurely and undeterred, the characters experience minimal development, and the antagonist is overcome with minimal difficulty. Whether or not the viewer is able to embrace these simplicities is what is sure to make or break the film to the individual viewer; if you're able to identify the simple points of the film as nonetheless solid supports of the story, there's a good chance you'll enjoy it. Make no mistake, this is a child's film, but truly one for children of all ages.
